Yoga for Amateurs

Posted 30 Nov 2010 by Syl

I heard someone say recently that the word "Amateur" does not necessarily mean you are not good at something.  The real meaning of this word is:  "doing something for the PURE LOVE of it".

I am safe to say, based on this, that I am ready to label myself as the quintessential AMATEUR!

One of the most basic aspects of yoga is the path of developing a "beginner's mind", this means you and I are willing to be open, vulnerable and teachable.

Without these three qualities of openness, vulnerability and teachability in body and mind, nothing new will ever happen in our lives.  We simply cannot progress.

The scariest thing I have ever witnessed in my life is someone who can live their life like they know all the rules, the whole plan start to finish.  All they need to do is just remember the rules...It's one of the greatest, most quiet human tragedies.

We are beings that have the potential to expand ourselves in ways that will give us new perspectives at any time or age in our lives, we are made that way inside and out.  From each new perspective we gain new personal agency and freedom to choose again, and expand from there...

Discovering Yoga has been one of the ways I have learned this, as it teaches me to love the moment I am in, and to trust that I will always be safe beyond the bounds of what I know, that is... so far!

Winter Solstice: Letting Go of the Old

Posted 24 Oct 2010 by Syl

Winter Solstice is a time for preparing to shed the old year and make space for another.  We are fast approaching the 2010 Solstice.  At Bodhi Yoga we are dedicating ourselves to complete our preparations for the holidays by December 20th.  Shedding the old pattern of over commercializing this Sacred time of year, we are going to send out 2010 with compassion appreciation and letting go through an afternoon of "Living Movement" Meditation on the evening of this year's Winter Solstice.

I hope you will join us, but if you live too far, make this season of reflective surrender a way to make space for blessings beyond measure to flow to you!

Yoga of Taste

Spiced Milk to Soothe the Soul

Posted 04 Oct 2009 by Syl

Ayurvedic Specialist Gwen Nitya Eby, prescribed spiced milk to help ground me, as a dietary support for my busy VATA lifestyle.

I immediately said:  "I can't drink milk, it's causes mucus and allergies in my body...I am lactose intolerant".  The conversation that followed opened my eyes!

The Ayurveda lifestyle teaches wise ways of approaching food and lifestyle.  Did you know that milk is not naturally a cold drink?  Drinking cold milk is hard on your digestion.  This made sense...How many babies nurse "cold milk" from their mothers...or take cold formula in their bottle?  It is too hard on the tummy.  So does that mean we give it up all together?  It was insightful food for thought.

Gwen also recommended several spices that would negate the mucus build up in the body, while still giving me grounding, digestive support and increasing my vitality!   So guess what it did???

Springtime Juicing Superfood

Posted 10 May 2009 by Syl

In an effort to get my daily dose of wheatgrass (without the gag reflex), I have found a creative way to make it taste great...no...really!!!  I call it "Champagne Tequilla".

To make pitcher full, I add two 2oz weatgrass shots to juiced:

1 Pineapple (cored & peeled)
7 Apples (whole)
4 lemons (with rind)

Stir together and enjoy...It tastes like a fabulous Brazilian Lemonade.
